I Made My Own Wedding Dress In 2023

 

I made the choice to make my own wedding gown. Considering that I didn’t have much sewing experience, this was a difficult project. I’ve only ever made a few little things, like pillowcases, and only two important items of clothing: a pirate corset and waistcoat.

I’ve never taken a course or anything like that. However, after viewing countless YouTube videos on making wedding dresses and learning the essential sewing skills I would need, I was certain that I could do it. After all, a wedding dress is really just a corset with a skirt connected to it.

In addition, I was given access to various helplines that I could call if I ran into a problem that I couldn’t resolve on my own. Although the entire dress-making process was lengthy, it was generally smooth, especially in the beginning.

and one extremely significant bump appeared in the road at various points, and several processes took far longer than anticipated.

Making Wedding Dress 

I’d like to walk you through the dress-making process in this instructable. Some of the images included in this Instructable were taken directly from the photo book I prepared on the dress construction for the wedding so that the wedding guests could see it, which explains the backgrounds and manipulated stuff ;).

I was quite pleased with the outcome, and I am very proud of what I produced. Enjoy my Instructable, I hope!

To make your own wedding dress, you must first imagine what it should seem like. This can be concepts you’ve had since you were a young girl, gowns you’ve seen in films or on countless episodes of “Say Yes to the Dress,” attending a bridal fashion show, or spending a lot of time browsing Google Images.

Even if you have no intention of purchasing a wedding gown,

it is a good idea to visit various bridal shops for dress fittings. First and foremost, going to a wedding shop to try on gowns is every bride’s dream.

Second, I could not pass up the opportunity to invite my mother, sister,

and closest friend along with me on this dress-shopping adventure.

However, I was mainly interested in determining whether the dress model I had in mind would look okay on me or if there were any other possibilities.

I’m pleased I didn’t skip this procedure. It was in fact a very pleasant experience for me to try on wedding gowns. I had a very wonderful consultant working with me, and she quickly grasped my likes and dislikes. I was interested in how the more mermaid, trumpet, or fit and flare style gowns would look on me even though I had a drop waist bodice in mind. Although the consultant urged me to try one on,

I was concerned that my hips would stand out too much in such gowns.

Then, when I put on the dress (Diane Legrand 6216) in the picture, I was pleasantly pleased by how good it looked on me. The dress looked different on me than it did on the model in the accompanying photos,

however we were not allowed to take pictures. My entourage also believed this was actually me and stated I looked stunning in this dress.

Even with minor modifications, if I had to buy a dress, this would have been it. I would have had a lace top made specifically for the dress because I really don’t enjoy a strapless dress (I believe it makes my shoulders appear wide,

I feel like I have to lift the garment every 10 seconds, and our wedding is in November,

so it might be a little chilly not having my shoulders covered). This could have been done at the store as well; they could have even used the dress’ own lace to build it.

I seriously considered purchasing this dress instead of going through the bother of sewing one myself. There were sequins all over the dress, making it shimmer like winter snow, but more significantly, I was already looking forward to the process of sewing my own dress and how proud I would be at the end. Nevertheless, it was slightly above budget, and I thought it had just a little too much sparkle. I therefore made the decision to substitute a trumpet/fit and flare style for the drop waist design of the dress.

What you need for this step is:

T-shirt dress and duct tape (about 1.5 roll)

Scissors Foam that expands cardboard (only a small amount, to close off arm and neck holes)

Rope (to hang dress form from ceiling when filling with the foam) (to hang dress form from ceiling while filling with the foam) PVC hose Stand and activate the dress form (I used my microphone stand) I had intended to create the dress’ design myself using a draping method.

This can be done using a dress form purchased from a store,

but you will subsequently need to modify the pattern to precisely fit your body. So I decided it would be simpler to create a personalised dress form that is a perfect replica of my figure and utilise that for the draping.

I made this dress form out of a cheap T-shirt dress. My fiance Ruud then wrapped the whole thing in duct tape. After putting duct tape all over me, we had to cut through my back to get rid of it.

With more duct tape, it’s easy to fix the wound again. Before it was hung upside down by a few ropes, the dress form was filled

with expanding foam and the arm and neck holes were sealed with cardboard circles (or ellipses) and duct tape.

I learned that filling is best done in several sessions because using too much foam at once will keep it from drying properly (depending on the used foam). When I put a piece of PVC pipe into the foam, it was still wet.

The dress form could be placed on a stand by sliding the PVC pipe over it once the foam had fully cured.

The major drawback to this approach is that the horizontal cross sections of the dress

form take on a circular shape due to the axisymmetric pressure of the foam. but these cross sections are more oval in the human body.

As a result, when viewed from the front and back, the dress form appears thinner than I am, and when viewed from the sides. it appears thicker. But because the circumference remained unchanged, I believed it would still be suitable to cover with the pattern.

The dress form would be strengthened with some cardboard to ensure its shape before being filled with foam the next time, though.
